This Entrepreneur Hopes Star Dust Will Replace Diamonds Moissanite is a gemstone that had its beginnings in the stars: a meteorite crashed in Arizona 50,000 years ago, leaving a handful of crystal fragments in its wake. Because of the scarcity, brilliance and strength of the original crystals (moissanite ranks 9.25 on the Mohs scale where diamonds are a 10), Charles & Colvard embarked on a research project to replicate the environment of the crashsite to successfully grow moissanite in a high-tech lab in North Carolina.
